How to propagate Dianthus chinensis

How to propagate Dianthus chinensis

Propagation method 1: sowing

Usually in September, we sow Dianthus chinensis. Fertile, well-drained, limestone or sandy soil is very suitable for sowing dianthus. After sowing, the soil needs to be kept moist. Buds will appear 5 days after sowing and seedlings will emerge in about 10 days. During the seedling emergence period, the maximum temperature needs to be maintained at 20 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature at 10 degrees Celsius. When the new dianthus seedlings have 4 to 5 leaves, they can be transplanted. If they are carefully cared for, they will bloom in the spring of the following year. You can also sow directly outdoors in September or in pots from November to December, and transplant to an open space outdoors in April of the following year.

Propagation method 2: Cuttings

The cutting propagation of Dianthus chinensis is mostly carried out from October to around March of the following year. During its maturity period, choose to cut young branches 5 to 6 cm in length as cuttings. The young branches should be healthy and disease-free. Insert half of the tender branch into the sand, water it immediately and pay attention to keeping it warm. During this period, the Dianthus needs to receive sufficient sunlight but not be exposed to excessive exposure. To prevent diseases and pests, it is also necessary to spray fungicides, such as Benomyl. The young cuttings will take root after 15 to 20 days and can then be transplanted into the garden or flower pots.

Propagation method three: division

In autumn or early spring, we use old plants of Dianthus chinensis for division propagation. Taking early spring division as an example, before the plant sprouts, dig up the entire Dianthus chinensis, divide it into several plants, and plant them separately. Dig planting holes, place one plant in each hole, then cover and compact with fine soil, and don't forget to water. There is too much rain in the summer and the Dianthus is in its growing period. It is necessary to strengthen fertilization and drainage management, otherwise it will cause root rot. It needs to be watered in time after the beginning of autumn so that it can sprout and grow leaves, and bloom beautifully when National Day arrives.
