How to graft Erqiao peony

Scarfing

This method allows you to use peony as the plant to receive cuttings. Because the roots of peony are relatively soft, they are easier to graft. The roots are relatively short and thick, and contain relatively high levels of nutrients, so the new plants can grow well after they are established. This method is best chosen between late September and early October. Choose peony roots that are 2-3cm in diameter and free of disease and insects.

Belly grafting

This method can be mainly carried out in July and August. Select the peony plants you want to propagate in advance, cut off the soil buds that sprout from the ground, and you can also choose branches of the current year, cut them to 5-7cm, and it is best to have two strong buds on them, and leave a petiole on the scion. After preparation, cut the back of the bud below the scion directly, but be careful to control the angle, preferably 45°, so that the area below can be exposed to nutrients is relatively large, and it is not easy to absorb. Watering is required before and after the operation, unless it rains when planted outdoors, in which case the humidity required for normal growth must be maintained. This method can cultivate many varieties at the same time and plant different flower colors on the same plant.

Bud grafting

This method is more suitable between May and July, and it is best to choose clear weather when operating. You can cut off a piece of the current year's branches and woody parts of the branches that are to receive the cuttings, then cut a block of the same size and shape from the axillary buds and woody parts of the scion, and then quickly stick the bud block on it, making the two fit as closely as possible. After completion, tie it up with the prepared plastic, and then water it, loosen the soil, etc. in time.
