Is it still called Monstera if it doesn’t open its back? Learn one trick, the leaves will crack into three fingers wide, and the black and shiny ones will suddenly grow to two meters high!

Monstera deliciosa seedlings do not open

The root system of Monstera in its seedling stage is not strong enough, and its leaves are mainly complete heart-shaped. However, as the Monstera grows, holes will gradually appear starting from about the fifth leaf.

Measures to promote back opening:

1. Increase lighting

Young Monstera seedlings need to receive more light to promote faster leaf growth. If the seedlings are kept in a dark and lightless environment for a long time, the plants will grow very slowly and the holes in the leaves will be small.

2. Water less

Young Monstera plants require very little water, and a small amount of water can promote the cracking of the leaves. Excessive watering will cause the leaves to grow larger without cracking.

Adult Monstera does not open its back

Some friends may find that their Monstera deliciosa has not bloomed even after one or two years of being bought. This requires us to find the reason in the daily maintenance of Monstera.

Too much or too little light

In late spring and summer, when the temperature is high, Monstera should be kept out of direct sunlight. But you can't always keep the Monstera in a dark room without sunlight. It is best to place it in a diffused light environment, such as a living room, to receive soft and bright light.

Lack of water

Unlike young Monstera deliciosa seedlings, adult Monstera deliciosa has a greater demand for water. It is generally watered once every 1-2 days in summer. You should also sprinkle water on the leaves frequently to increase the humidity of the surrounding environment and promote leaf growth and cracking.

Improper fertilization

Adult Monstera has a relatively large demand for fertilizer, and it is best to apply decomposed cake fertilizer water 1-2 times a month. When applying fertilizer, combine it with watering, dig up the soil at the edge of the flowerpot, bury the fertilizer in it, and then cover it with soil.

Bought a fake "Monstera"

If none of the above applies to your Monstera, then it is very likely that you have bought a fake Monstera - the Weeping Goddess of Water.

The weeping angel is very similar to the unopened Monstera in the seedling stage. Therefore, if your Monstera does not bloom, then it is very likely that you have bought the Weeping Goddess of Mercury.

Repotting and division

Some flower lovers also reported that their Monstera plants originally had open leaves, but the newly grown leaves suddenly stopped opening. This reminds you that it’s time to repot and divide the Monstera!

1. Remove from the basin

Pat the outside of the flowerpot to remove the Monstera from its original pot, break up the soil and remove the potting soil.

2. Division

After removing the soil from the Monstera, rinse the roots with water and divide them into several individual plants.

3. Root pruning

Cut off all rotten parts, dead roots and weak roots, cut off the bottom rhizome, and leave a bud point.

4. Put it in the basin

Put the divided and pruned Monstera back into the pot. First, spread a layer of humus on the bottom of the pot, then place the Monstera in the middle of the pot, and finally fix it with soil.

5. Water thoroughly

The first time you water, make sure to water thoroughly. After that, you can water once every 1-2 days, being careful not to allow water to accumulate.

Monstera rhizome cuttings

When dividing the plant, don’t throw away the rhizomes that Huahua cuts off. Use them for cuttings and you can harvest another Monstera!

1. Soil preparation

Mix leaf mold and garden soil in a 1:1 ratio to make humus soil.

2. Bury the rhizomes

Place the rhizome flat in the soil, with the roots completely buried but the cut ends exposed. After burying it, water it thoroughly and then place it in a cool and ventilated place for maintenance.

This is the end of the sharing of knowledge about Monstera deliciosa.

Have you learned it?

If you have any questions, you can leave a message to Huahua~
