Onions are native to western Asia and are widely cultivated around the world. The plants have good adaptability to the environment and prefer a warm, well-lit growing environment. They are a long-day crop that requires 14 hours of light a day.

The optimum growth temperature for onion leaves is 18-20°C. The optimum growth temperature for bulbs is 20-26°C. The plants have a certain degree of cold resistance, but they are easily frostbitten in an environment of -6°C.

Onion growth humidity

The growth of onions requires a certain humidity, and the air humidity should be between 60% and 70%. If the air humidity is too high, the plants will easily become diseased.

Onion growing soil

Onions prefer fertile, loose, well-ventilated neutral soil. Choosing sandy loam for planting will easily yield high yields. Choosing clay loam when planting will make the bulbs full and have good color.

Onion growth cycle and process

The onion plant can live up to 20 years. It goes through three stages of growth: vegetative growth, physiological dormancy, and reproductive growth. It reaches its peak rooting period in April and May every year. The bulb begins to grow rapidly about 40 days before harvest, reaching its maximum value 15 days before harvest.
