Freshwater shrimp farming methods and techniques

Freshwater shrimp farming methods and techniques

There are many varieties of freshwater shrimp, including green shrimp , grass shrimp , Macrobrachium rosenbergii , Australian lobster, white shrimp, golden shrimp, crayfish, ghost shrimp and swamp shrimp, etc. Although each group has its own unique characteristics and habits, they are all scattered in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and ponds in the vast territory of China. Let’s talk about the breeding methods and techniques of freshwater shrimp.

1. Pond cleaning

The ideal pond area is 4-10 mu, and the pond should have a flat bottom, good water retention, easily controllable water level, sufficient water source, and unpolluted water. Drainage channels should be built to ensure water can be filled and drained, and escape facilities should also be constructed.

2. Pool cleaning and disinfection

20-30 days before stocking shrimp, drain the pond water, remove excess sludge, repair the pond bank, and then thoroughly clean the pond with 75 kg of quicklime or bleaching powder, bleaching powder essence, etc. per mu.

3. Fertilization and bait cultivation

One week before stocking the shrimp fry, filter with 60-80 mesh silk screen, let in 30 cm of water, apply 500-600 kg of decomposed livestock and poultry manure per mu, cultivate rotifers, cladocerans and copepods to provide palatable bait for the shrimp fry and shrimp seeds.

4. Shrimp fry stocking

Shrimp fry can be released in late May when the water temperature stabilizes at 18-20℃. It needs more than a week of desalination treatment and can be released when the specific gravity is below 1.003. 30,000 to 40,000 shrimp fry of 0.7-1 cm can be released per acre, and those below 0.7 cm need to be temporarily raised.

5. Feeding

The shrimp fry do not need to be fed within one month after being put into the pond. After one month, they should be fed with mixed bait, supplemented by fresh fish, shellfish meat, etc. The feeding rate should be 3%-5% of body weight. From July to September, the feeding amount should be appropriately increased, and the feeding should be 2-3 times a day, with 1/3 during the day and 2/3 in the evening.

6. Adjust water to prevent diseases

Ten days after the shrimp fry are released, gradually add water, add 10-15 cm of water per week. In the hot season, change 20-30 cm of water every 2-3 days. Every half month, use 5-10 kg of quicklime to make a slurry and sprinkle it in the entire pond. Mix 1%-3% garlic bait every 15-20 days.

7. Capture at the right time

The shrimp fry are cultured for 80-100 days. When the shrimp body is 7-10 cm, they are captured and sold according to market conditions. They can be captured by nets or released into water. They are transported alive by dry method 36 hours out of water, and the survival rate can reach over 90%.
