How to propagate cactus

The main ways to propagate cactus are bulb division, cuttings and grafting. Its seeds can also be propagated, and its natural way of reproduction is seed propagation. Generally speaking, cuttings are the fastest way to propagate.

Cactus breeding time

The best time to breed cacti is generally spring. The climate in these two seasons is suitable, and the temperature, humidity and other aspects are suitable, so the survival rate of breeding is high.

How to propagate cactus

Propagation of cactus by division

The method of propagating cactus by division is relatively simple. You only need to pull out the seedlings or bulbs and plant them separately, but you need to pay attention to proper maintenance.

Propagation of cactus by cuttings

The best time to propagate cactus by cuttings is from April to May. Take large branches with nodes 1 to 4 as cuttings. Dry them in a place without direct sunlight for two or three days to allow the wound to heal. Insert them into the prepared soil. Place them in a cool place before they take root. Water them sparingly and they will take root in about 20 days.

Seed propagation of cactus

First, soak the cactus seeds in water for 2-3 days to wet the bottom of the pot, then seal the whole plant with plastic film, and keep the room temperature at around 25℃. It will take about a month to germinate.

How to propagate hydroponic cactus

Choose a cactus with a healthy sphere, cut off all dead roots, then clean the rhizome with clean water, and dry it in a ventilated sunny place to make the cut completely dry.

Prepare a transparent glass bottle and fill it with clean water. The water level should not exceed 1/3 of the entire bottle. Then place the cactus at the mouth of the bottle with the roots immersed in the water. Provide scattered light and keep the indoor temperature above 20°C.

Cactus breeding precautions

During the propagation of cactus, it is important to note that the plant needs to be repotted every other year in early spring. Watering should be stopped 2-3 days before repotting, some old roots should be cut off, some old soil should be removed, new culture soil should be added, and then the plant should be repotted.

Because cacti are covered with tiny thorns that can easily injure people, be sure to use gloves when breeding to avoid being injured.
