How to propagate chives and what to pay attention to

How to propagate leeks

The main methods of propagating leek are sowing propagation and division propagation, so its seeds can also be propagated, but the propagation speed is a bit slow. Generally speaking, leek division propagation is the fastest, simple and convenient.

Leek breeding time

If leeks are propagated by sowing, the most suitable time is early to mid-April in the Huanghuai River Basin, December to February in the south, and May to June in the north, with a high survival rate.

Leek propagation method

Leek division propagation

Remove a part of the rhizome from the old leek plant and then plant it separately to become a new plant. This method of reproduction using rhizomes is called root division, also known as asexual reproduction.

Leek sowing propagation

Put fresh leek seeds in warm water at about 40 degrees to brew, disinfect and sterilize, then soak the seeds in clean water at room temperature for about 24 hours to allow the seeds to fully absorb water, take out the seeds, drain the water, and put them on a clean wet cloth to germinate for about three days. After about 75% of the seeds turn white, they can be sown.

Things to note when breeding chives

1. It is best to soak the leek seeds to germinate before sowing and propagating them. This can save seedling raising time and also increase the germination rate of the seeds.

2. Chives have a very strong adaptability to land, so the choice of soil is not particularly important. The key is which type of land can grow better. Basically, choose a place close to a water source. Secondly, the land's water storage capacity and fertility should be relatively good.
