Onion growing environment and growing conditions

Onion Growth Environment and Conditions

Onions were originally distributed in western Asia, but are now widely grown throughout the world and in both the north and south of China. They are mainly distributed in Shanxian, Pingdu, Yutai, Jinxiang in Shandong, Yuanmou and Dongchuan in Yunnan, Xichang in Sichuan, Fengxian in Jiangsu, Jiuquan and Wuwei in Gansu.

Onion Growing Conditions

Onions prefer sunlight. They are crops that require relatively long periods of light. Onions require a lot of water at every stage of their growth, such as the germination stage, seedling stage, growth stage, and bulb expansion stage. The soil needs to be kept moist, but waterlogging should not be caused.

Onion growing temperature

1. Onions can be considered as vegetables with relatively good adaptability. Onion seeds and bulbs can slowly germinate at a temperature of 3 to 5 degrees. 12 to 20 degrees is very suitable for the growth of onion seedlings.

2. The best growth temperature for onion leaves is 18 degrees to 20 degrees, and the most suitable growth temperature for onion bulbs is 20 degrees to 26 degrees. Seedlings with better growth can survive at a temperature of 6 degrees to 7 degrees.

3. The onion bulb expansion stage requires very high temperature. A temperature of 21 degrees to 28 degrees is more conducive to the growth of the bulb. It is important to note that the temperature during the bulb expansion stage cannot be lower than 15 degrees, otherwise the bulb will stop expanding. Also note that too high a temperature will cause the onion growth to degenerate and enter dormancy.

The growth process of onions

There are three main stages in the growth of onions. Plant the onions and keep the soil slightly moist. Roots will grow in about three days. Green buds will grow on the ninth day after planting. As the green buds gradually mature, more leaves will grow.

Onion Planting Time and Method

Onions are mostly planted by sowing. The best planting time is in autumn from September to October. The best sowing time in the Huanghuai region is early September. In addition, when planting onions, attention should be paid to selecting the cultivar that best suits the local environment. Seedling cultivation and field management are also very important.
