When is the best time to prune a pear tree?

Pear Tree Overview

Pear trees are pear plants of the Rosaceae family and are widely planted throughout the world. China's pear cultivation area and output are second only to apples. Hebei, Shandong and Liaoning in China are the concentrated producing areas of Chinese pears. It likes a warm environment and requires a higher temperature during its growth period and a certain low temperature during its dormant period. It is suitable for planting in soil with deep, loose, fertile, good permeability and water retention properties.

Pear tree pruning time

Pear trees can be pruned all year round, and the pruning methods are different in different seasons. In July of summer, the main thing is to thin out upright branches, overcrowded branches, overlapping branches, crossed branches, thin branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, etc. Do not shorten the branches at this time.

If the pear tree grows too tall, it is recommended to trim it about 15 days after the leaves fall in autumn. Winter pruning of the pear tree can be done between 10 days after the leaves fall and half a month before budding. It is best to do winter pruning in December.

Pear tree pruning method

Pear trees have strong sprouting ability but weak branching ability. Heavy pruning can be done on alternate-year trees and weak trees, while light pruning or no pruning can be done on off-year trees and vigorous trees. Secondly, reasonable pruning should be done according to the size of the pear tree and the strength of the tree, especially different pruning methods should be adopted for different types of branches.

Pear tree pruning precautions

Diseased and insect-infested branches of pear trees should be pruned in time and burned in a concentrated manner. This can reduce the occurrence of diseases and insects. In addition, the cuts after pruning should not be exposed to water, otherwise it will cause the wound to rot, which is not conducive to the growth and development of the plant.
