How to save cabbage seeds

Cabbage seeds

Cabbage has seeds that can be kept for yourself. The flowering period of cabbage is May, and the fruiting period (seeds) matures in June. Cabbage is mainly spread by bees. The number of pollinating bees directly affects the hybridization rate and yield of the seeds. Through the spread of pollen, seeds begin to form.

How to collect cabbage seeds

Cabbage seeds are collected and can generally be preserved for two years. The seeds harvested in the same year can be directly sown in the same year and can still be used for seeds in the second year.

Cabbage seed storage

1. First, the harvested cabbage seeds must be screened, and those with pests and diseases, shriveled, moldy, or cracked seed coats must be picked out. Such seeds are prone to deterioration in a humid environment, which in turn affects other seeds. Therefore, only full seeds should be left.

2. Place the selected high-quality seeds in the sun to dry. The seeds must be dried, otherwise they will easily become damp and moldy. Of course, the seeds cannot be overexposed, otherwise it will affect the germination rate.

3. After the seeds are dried, they can be put into sealed containers such as jars and sealed bags. Although the seeds are dried, they are still alive and can breathe. Therefore, the container cannot be completely sealed and airtight, otherwise the seeds cannot breathe and will die, and they will not germinate. The container should be placed in a cool, ventilated and dry place.

Cabbage seeds planting

Cabbage can be divided into spring cabbage, summer cabbage, autumn cabbage and overwintering cabbage. Spring is suitable for sowing in March and April, summer is suitable for sowing in May to July, and autumn is suitable for sowing 3 to 5 days around the beginning of autumn. It can be slightly delayed or advanced depending on the temperature of the planting site. Winter can be sown in mid-September or early October.
