Is yam a shade-loving or sun-loving plant?

Does yam prefer shade or sun?

Yam is a herb that likes sunlight. It is mainly distributed in Korea, Japan and China. It is a short-day, warm-loving crop.

It grows best at a temperature of 25-28℃. Temperatures below 20℃ will slow down its growth. An environment with sufficient light can allow it to absorb nutrients more fully and accumulate more nutrients to produce yam with more nutritional value.

Yam basking in the sun

Yam needs a certain amount of sunlight during the growing season. It needs strong light to fully develop its photosynthetic capacity. Especially in winter, it is necessary to expose the plant to sunlight as much as possible to prevent the plant from freezing and affecting the development of the yam.

Yams can be exposed to the sun. They need more sun at normal times. Yams should be exposed to the sun even more after sprouting. The more sun they get, the faster they grow. If they do not get enough light during the growth period, the leaves will fall off easily, resulting in lower nutritional value of the yam.

Growth habits of yam

Yam likes warm and dry conditions and likes to grow in loose, fertile sandy acidic soil. It requires higher temperatures for germination.

It is a drought-tolerant plant that does not require watering under normal circumstances. Strong light is more conducive to its photosynthesis, so it is generally grown in loose soil fields with direct sunlight.
