Bonsai repotting time

Bonsai needs to be repotted. The best time to repot is in spring when the climate is just right. Repotting will cause less damage to the plant and will not affect the plant too much. The plant also has stronger germination and recovers faster, which is also helpful for later growth. In addition to spring, autumn can also be chosen.

Bonsai repotting method

1. Remove from the basin

If you want to repot a bonsai, you first need to remove it from the pot. The first step is to take the plant out of the old pot intact. 2 to 3 days after the last watering, gently tap the potting wall with your palm to loosen the soil near the pot wall, then remove all the plants, clean up the remaining soil at the bottom of the pot, and only keep the soil bag at the roots.

2. Pruning

After removing the plant from the old pot, you can comb the roots slightly, remove the outermost small part of the old soil wrapped around the roots, carefully observe the development and health status of the roots, trim off the dead roots, rotten roots, dead roots, etc. on the roots, disinfect them after pruning, place them in a cool place to ventilate and dry, and wait for the wound to shrink.

3. Disinfection

If you still use old flower pots to grow plants, you need to brush and dry the old pots to remove the residual soil in the old pots. New pots do not need to be brushed, but both new and old pots need to be sterilized and disinfected. Soak and rinse the pots in a disinfectant solution to kill the bacteria in the pots.

4. Transplanting

After the flowerpot and plant are prepared, they can be transplanted. Before transplanting, apply an appropriate amount of rooting powder on the root cut of the plant, and then plant it in the new potting soil. Cover the soil and press it firmly, then water it once to make the soil slightly moist. After that, the plant can be transferred to a place with sufficient light, ventilation and coolness for maintenance.

Notes on bonsai repotting

After the bonsai is repotted, the root system is relatively fragile and needs careful care and management. Provide a semi-shaded, well-ventilated environment, water it appropriately, keep the soil slightly moist, and avoid water accumulation. Wait until it takes root before performing normal care.
