What is the appropriate planting density and yield for cowpea planting?

Cowpea planting spacing

When planting cowpea, the best density is a row spacing of about 66-70cm and a plant spacing of about 20-25cm . Place 4-5 seeds in each hole, and it is best to leave 2-3 seedlings. However, the spacing between dwarf varieties needs to be larger. The row spacing is best at about 50-60cm, and the plant spacing is best at about 25-30cm.

Cowpea yield per mu

Under normal circumstances, the per-acre yield of cowpea is about 1,700-3,000 kilograms. Because there are many varieties of cowpea, the per-acre yield of different varieties will also be different. For example, the per-acre yield of E-cowpea No. 12 can reach 1,700 kilograms, while the per-acre yield of Guijiang No. 1 and Chengjiang No. 10 can reach about 2,000 kilograms, and the per-acre yield of Zaojiang No. 4 can reach about 3,000 kilograms.

Cowpea harvest time

Cowpea can be divided into spring cowpea and summer cowpea according to the different planting time:

1. Spring cowpea

Spring cowpea seedlings start to be raised in late February, and are not transplanted until late March. They can be harvested from early June to mid-August, and seeds are collected from late July to early August.

2. Summer cowpea

The harvest time of summer cowpea varies depending on the river basin. In the Yellow River Basin, it is sown from April to June each year and can be harvested in mid-July. In the Yangtze River Basin, it is sown from mid-April to early July and can be harvested in late August.
