Does pitaya need pruning? Under what circumstances can it be pruned?

Pitaya is a perennial climbing succulent plant. Unlike other fruit trees, it does not have wooden main trunks and branches. It is easy to form a larger crown. If it is not pruned, many problems will arise. Therefore, it is an essential management matter. Proper pruning can promote the growth and expansion of the main branches of pitaya .

Dragon fruit pruning time

The time for pruning pitaya is fixed. Generally, pruning starts about fifteen days after the pitaya is fully harvested. Pruning is also required during the seedling stage, flowering stage, and fruiting stage. The time to keep the branches depends on the local temperature. When the temperature is between fifteen and twenty-five degrees, comprehensive pruning and shaping can be carried out.

How to prune dragon fruit

When pruning dragon fruit seedlings, only the top buds need to be retained, and all side buds should be cut off. If the top bud is not in good condition, a new bud should be grown. Only one bud is required during the seedling stage. Leaving too many buds will waste nutrients and affect the growth rate of the seedlings. When the branches are in bloom, some of the branches that have not bloomed should be cut off to supply nutrients to the fruit. When pruning, cut to the bottom.

After the fruit is ripe, the branches that are not drooping well are cut off and they can grow again next year. The ultimate goal of growing dragon fruit is to produce fruit. So do not keep the branches that cannot produce fruit. Too many branches will only cause a waste of nutrients, and even lead to insufficient nutrition and no fruit. Of course, fertilization is also very important.
