When is the best month to plant lettuce in the north? When and how to plant lettuce in the north

Lettuce is a common vegetable in daily life. If the temperature is suitable, it can be planted all year round. In northern my country, it should be possible to plant 2 to 3 crops a year.

Lettuce planting time in the north

Lettuce is a common vegetable, but there are certain differences in planting time between the north and the south. Generally, it is planted in July and August in the south, while in April and May in the north .

Northern lettuce harvest

The growth cycle of lettuce in the north is about 70-90 days. It can be harvested according to market conditions and field conditions. Generally speaking, the height of the lettuce can reach 15 cm .

Northern lettuce planting method

1. Planting

Lettuce seeds are too small and too light, so they need to be mixed with fine sand, placed in a container and stirred evenly, and then sprinkled on the soil . Cover with 0.5 to 1 cm of soil, a thin layer, and germinate in about 3 to 5 days at 15 to 20 degrees. It is difficult to germinate when the temperature is higher than 25 degrees.

When planting in summer, you need to germinate the seeds. Soak the seeds for 1 night, then wrap them with wet gauze and put them in the refrigerator (about 5 degrees). When more than half of the seeds turn white, you can sow them.

2. Seedling stage

During the lettuce seedling stage, the soil must be kept moist and not dry. The soil should be kept permeable. Thin the seedlings when they have 2 to 3 true leaves, and the plant spacing should be 5 to 8 cm.

3. Transplanting

Transplant the lettuce seedlings when they have 5-6 true leaves . Water thoroughly before transplanting, and move them to a large pot with the soil on the roots. The spacing between loose-leaf lettuce plants is 15 cm, and the fruiting plant is 30 cm. Water thoroughly, and place them in a cool place in summer to slow down the growth. After about a week, when the roots have established themselves, they can be exposed to normal sunlight.

What should you pay attention to when growing lettuce?

1. Fertilization

Fertilize the lettuce seedlings once a week after transplanting, with nitrogen fertilizer as the main fertilizer and decomposed organic fertilizer as the best. Apply organic fertilizer or compound fertilizer mainly composed of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium once in the second and fourth weeks after transplanting, and stop fertilizing 2 weeks before harvesting.

2. Watering

When the temperature is high, water the lettuce in the morning and evening. It is best to water it in small amounts frequently, but avoid waterlogging. In the early stages of growth, it is suitable to control water and keep it moist.
