Should eggshells be used as fertilizer, raw or cooked?

Eggshells contain a lot of calcium , a small amount of phosphorus , and other trace elements needed for plant growth. Their main function is to promote the growth of roots and make leaves greener.

When eggshells are made into fertilizer, they become organic fertilizer, which is an organic nitrogen fertilizer and calcium fertilizer , and is very beneficial to the growth of plant roots and branches and leaves.

In fact, eggshells can be cooked or raw, only the egg white and yolk inside are raw or cooked . The key is that the eggshell does not lose its ingredients due to heating, it still contains calcium and other trace elements.

Therefore, eggshell fertilizer can be spread on the surface or deep in the soil according to different uses such as fertilization and pH adjustment. However, some friends use eggshells improperly, and eggshells become a breeding ground for insects. Because untreated eggshells cannot be used as fertilizer, they will emit a lot of odor and easily attract flies and various small insects, which does more harm than good.

How to use egg shells as fertilizer

①High temperature heating method

The calcium carbonate in the eggshells needs to be converted into calcium fertilizer so that it can be absorbed and used by plants . The method is to dry the eggshells, rub them into powder, put them on tiles, heat them with fire, and wait until the eggshells start to turn yellow before using them as fertilizer.

Calcium carbonate is not easy to decompose at room temperature and cannot be absorbed and utilized by plants. It will only decompose into quicklime (calcium oxide) when the temperature reaches above 897℃. It will decompose into slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) when it meets water and can be absorbed and utilized by plants.

②Mix with vinegar

Adding vinegar to cooked eggshells while they are still hot, or soaking discarded eggshells in boiling water for 10 minutes and then adding vinegar, will produce calcium acetate . Calcium acetate is easily soluble in water and can be used as a phosphorus fertilizer and calcium fertilizer for grains, vegetables, fruit trees and flowers after being crushed.

③ Crushed and used

Simply peel off the cooked eggshells, dry them, and crush them. Use the alkaline effect of calcium carbonate to adjust the pH of the soil and provide phosphorus nutrition for crops.

④ Fermentation and use

Crush the eggshells and add them to farmyard manure for decomposition. The farmyard manure's acidic substances can be used for decomposition and can also be used as fertilizer.
