When is the survival rate of camellia cuttings high (how long does it take for camellia cuttings to take root)

When is the best time for camellia cuttings to survive?

The cuttings of camellia mainly depend on the temperature, and the season is just a reference. In the south, cuttings can be done 365 days a year without dead ends. As long as you pay attention to temperature control and moisture retention in summer, it will not affect the survival rate .

The most suitable temperature for camellia cuttings is between 18 and 28 degrees Celsius, with a temperature difference of 8 degrees Celsius between day and night. Flower lovers in the north use the temperature as the time standard for cuttings .

Our country is vast, and the temperature difference between the four seasons is too large. If we judge cuttings based on the season, then in Fujian, the temperature in August of the lunar calendar is still above 20 degrees Celsius, so cuttings can be carried out.

But at that time, the temperature in some areas of the north had already dropped below 15 degrees Celsius . So low-temperature cuttings would definitely not work. Temperature is the only criterion for cutting plants.

How to propagate camellia cuttings to improve the survival rate

(1) Camellia cuttings

It is best to use healthy side shoots of about two years old for cuttings of camellia. Too young branches are prone to dehydration and dryness, and too old branches have reduced cell activity and are not easy to root .

The tools used for pruning branches should be disinfected with disinfectants such as carbendazim first to avoid bacterial infection from touching the wounds during pruning.

The branches are trimmed to about 10 to 15 cm, retaining 4 buds on the top and 2 leaves. The bottom of the cutting branches is trimmed to a 45° angle. Soak the cuttings in 800 times the rooting agent containing "naphthaleneacetic acid" for half an hour before cutting.

(2) Camellia cutting planting material

When cutting camellia, the soil should be clean and sterile, with good air permeability and water permeability, and a slightly acidic pH value .

You can mix coconut bran + perlite + river sand in a ratio of 4:3:3. The planting material for cuttings must not contain nutrients. If you can't find mixed materials for cuttings, you can use river sand directly for cuttings.

(3) Management of camellia after cutting

Move the grafted camellia to a location with bright light and good ventilation and maintain it for about 10 days .

After 10 days, when the leaves do not turn yellow and are still exposed to light, you can move the pot to a location that gets light for 3 hours a day . Be careful not to expose it to strong light.

② Keep the planting material slightly moist before cutting, and spray more after cutting to keep the branches moist and humidify the environment. Water thoroughly once after 48 hours, and continue the watering method of "don't water if it's not dry, and water thoroughly if it's dry", and keep spraying 3 to 5 times a day .

③ When taking cuttings in the dry north, you can only use iron wire or bamboo strips as a support, and then cover it with a plastic bag to make a simple greenhouse flower shed. This can humidify the small environment and ensure the survival rate of the cuttings.
