How long does it take for fennel to sprout?

Fennel is a plant of the genus Fennel in the Apiaceae family. It is a very common wild vegetable. It has both certain edible value and high medicinal value, and has broad prospects for cultivation. So how many days does it take for fennel seeds to germinate after sowing? Let’s learn more about it below.

How long does it take for fennel to sprout?

It usually takes about 8-10 days for fennel to germinate after sowing. However, its specific germination time will be affected by many factors, including seed quality, temperature, humidity, etc.

How to grow fennel so it germinates quickly?

1. Scientific seed selection

Choose seeds that are full, yellow-green in color, and free of disease. In order to increase the germination rate, you can soak the seeds in 10% salt water, remove the floating seeds, and select the seeds that sink to the bottom of the water.

2. Seed soaking and germination

Soak the seeds in warm water at about 55°C for 12 hours. After they have absorbed enough water, rub them repeatedly with your hands to separate them. Take them out and wash them with clean water before germinating them. Put the seeds in a gauze bag and place them in an environment of 20-22℃ for germination.

3. Land preparation and fertilization

In order to ensure the germination rate of fennel seeds , it is necessary to carry out fine land preparation and apply sufficient base fertilizer in advance. Generally, 1800-2000kg of decomposed farmyard manure, 30-45kg of triple compound fertilizer or urea are applied per mu, and the land is deeply plowed and fully stirred to ensure even distribution of the fertilizer .

4. Key points for sowing

Fennel prefers a cool climate and is generally suitable for sowing in mid-March. Sowing can be done by row sowing or hole sowing, with the row spacing at 15×30cm and the sowing depth at 3-5cm. Generally, row sowing requires 2-3kg of seeds per mu, while hole sowing requires 1-1.5kg per mu.

5. Transplanting and planting

When the seedlings have 3-5 true leaves or the plant height is 10-12cm, they can be transplanted and planted. Before transplanting, water the seedbed thoroughly and dig out the seedlings with their roots together with the soil to protect the integrity of the fennel roots and increase the survival rate. When transplanting, dig planting holes on the vegetable bed with a row spacing of about 25cm and a plant spacing of 20-30cm, water the bottom of the hole sufficiently, plant the seedlings, and then cover with soil and compact it. Pay attention to maintaining the moisture content in the soil.

In general, fennel usually takes about 8-10 days to germinate. In order to ensure that fennel seeds can germinate smoothly, it is recommended to sow them when the temperature is suitable in spring and keep the soil moist. At the same time, you can consider soaking the seeds to speed up the germination. Of course, mastering the correct sowing technique is also very important.
