The best time to graft fruit trees

The best time to graft fruit trees

1. Time of grafting

The best time to graft fruit trees is in spring, specifically around March. Because the rootstock buds have just begun to sprout at this time, the wounds caused by premature grafting heal slowly and are more likely to cause diseases and pests. Doing it too late will affect the growth of fruit trees and even cause death in winter. Therefore, it is most appropriate to graft about ten days before budding. In addition, pay attention to the weather and go out when the weather is clear.

2. Grafting Methods

There are many methods for grafting fruit trees. Judging from the use of scion, it can be mainly divided into branch grafting and bud grafting. According to the grafting site, it is divided into root grafting, double grafting, belly grafting, rhizome grafting and high grafting. If we look at the form of the interface, it can be divided into cut grafting, cleft grafting, bark grafting, tongue grafting, abutment grafting, and bud grafting, etc.

3. Management after grafting

1. Pest and disease control: Pay attention to strengthening the management of fruit trees after grafting, because they are susceptible to various pests and diseases from grafting to germination. Once discovered, they must be sprayed with pesticides to eliminate them immediately, otherwise it will affect survival.

2. Remove suckers: About ten days after grafting, suckers will appear on the rootstock. They must be removed in time, otherwise it will affect the later growth. If the joint of the rootstock is small and thick, do not remove all of it, but leave a part away from the joint.

3. Re-grafting: Check regularly after grafting. If it is found that the graft has not survived, re-graft it as soon as possible.
