How to propagate carnations by cuttings (with illustrations of the steps)

1. Time Selection

The timing for carnation cuttings is very important, and they are more likely to survive if done at the right time. Spring and autumn are the times when it grows fastest, and this is the best time to take cuttings. The temperature rises quickly in summer and the weather is very hot and humid. Be sure to avoid taking cuttings in the hot summer to prevent the branches from rotting.

2. Cutting cuttings

When choosing cuttings, you should cut them from healthy plants. It is best if the cuttings have 3-4 pairs of expanded leaves and 1 pair of unexpanded leaves. The length should be about 7cm, and the leaves at the bottom need to be cut off. In addition, the side buds will grow faster.

3. Prepare the matrix

Before cuttings, you need to prepare some substrate suitable for its growth. It likes to grow in alkaline soil, and the soil must be relatively loose. It can be mixed with sand and perlite. Or you can buy soil directly, but it must be alkaline soil.

4. Take cuttings

Cuttings are not difficult. After pruning the branches, insert them into the prepared substrate, about 2-3cm, and then press them down with the surrounding soil. After cuttings, water it thoroughly and place it in a relatively dark location, and ensure good ventilation. It will take about a month to grow roots.
