How do northern grapes survive the winter? Do they have to be buried in the soil?

1. Watering with freezing water

The temperature in the north is relatively low in winter, so plants have to be buried in the soil to survive the winter. Water the plants once 10 days before burying them in the soil to prevent frostbite of the roots and avoid drought in early spring. At this time, water thoroughly and sufficiently to saturate the soil. Cover the soil when it becomes slightly dry.

2. The First Burial

The burial should be carried out in two steps. The first time is when the temperature remains at two degrees, then the pruned branches should be tied up and covered with a layer of soil. Be careful not to make the soil too thick, just enough so that the branches and vines are not exposed. After the temperature drops in late autumn, it is necessary to prune it to prevent a large amount of water from evaporating from the branches, which will be detrimental to germination and growth next year.

3. Second Burial

When the temperature remains at zero degrees for a second time, the soil should be buried for the second time. At this time, the thickness of the soil should be increased, and an appropriate amount of hay or corn stalks should be prepared to cover the root system to increase the temperature and prevent the roots from freezing. Be careful to stay away from the roots when digging. The width of the buried soil is approximately maintained between 1.8 and 2 meters, and the thickness is more than 60 centimeters.

4. Specific methods of burial

There are two common methods of burying soil. One is burying soil on the ground. Simply press the pruned plant down to the ground, then cover it with soil. The specific thickness of the soil depends on the temperature. The lower the temperature, the thicker the covering soil. The second is the underground burial method. Dig trenches along the extension of branches with a depth of 30-50 cm, then press the branches into the trench and cover them with soil. This method is more suitable for plants with many branches.
