How do northern grapevines survive the winter and how do they prevent frost?

1. Master the cold resistance performance

If you want it to survive the winter better, you need to understand its ability to withstand cold. It has a certain degree of cold resistance, but it is easily damaged by frost when the temperature drops to minus 6 degrees Celsius, and it will be frozen to death when it drops to minus 8 degrees Celsius, so the temperature should be kept above minus 6 degrees Celsius.

2. Watering with freezing water

Before burying the plant in the soil in winter, you should water it with anti-freezing water about 10 days before burying it. This can prevent its roots from being damaged by frost and avoid drought in early spring. When watering, make sure to water thoroughly and sufficiently to saturate the soil. Then wait until the soil is slightly dry before covering it with soil.

3. Bury the first cold-proof soil

After the grape leaves fall, they need to be pruned, all dead branches and rotten leaves need to be removed, and the branches and vines need to be tied up. When the temperature remains at around 2 degrees, cover the soil. Be careful not to cover too much soil the first time, just make sure the branches and vines are not exposed.

4. Bury the second cold-proof soil

The second time you frost-proof the soil, it is recommended that you prepare an appropriate amount of corn stalks or hay when the temperature remains at 0 degrees, so as to better protect the roots from frost damage. At this time, the width of the buried cold-proof soil is about 1.8-2 meters, and the thickness of the soil covering the branches and vines is more than 60 centimeters, so as to ensure that they will not be damaged by frost.
