When is the right time to plant potatoes?

Potatoes , also known as potatoes, have different planting times in different regions due to the large temperature difference between north and south of China. Potatoes are a crop that cannot tolerate continuous cropping. The land for planting potatoes should be selected where potatoes and other Solanaceae crops have not been planted within three years. So when is the right time to plant potatoes? Let’s take a look with the editor below.

1. When is the right time to plant potatoes?

The temperature in China varies greatly, and the time for potato planting is also different in different regions. Generally speaking, potatoes are planted in most parts of China from October to December each year. Of course, if the temperature in this area does not differ much throughout the year, potatoes can be planted all year round.

The planting time in the north and south of my country is different. For example, in the Northeast, potatoes are planted in April and May. Hunan and Shanxi generally have two planting seasons in February, March and August, while Zhejiang has two planting seasons in January, February and September. The planting time of potatoes is basically determined by the temperature of the planting area, so the sowing time needs to be determined according to the temperature of the area.

2. Gourd sowing method

1. Site selection and land preparation

Potatoes like fertilizer, so try to choose land with fertile and loose soil. Sandy soil is most suitable for the growth of potatoes. When preparing the land, dig as deep as possible, make the soil fine, and then apply base fertilizer. This can eliminate weeds in the field, prevent diseases, and is more conducive to the growth of potatoes.

2. Fertilization

Since potatoes have a short growth period and require fertilizer at a concentrated period, base fertilizer is the main type of fertilizer applied. Before tillage, 3-5 cubic meters of high-quality decomposed manure should be spread per mu, and chemical fertilizers should be applied in furrows during sowing.

3. Germination and cutting

Cut into pieces 1-3 days before sowing or sow immediately after cutting. Do not cut too early to prevent seed rot. Before cutting, prepare two knives and soak them in 75% alcohol for disinfection. Cut the seed potatoes that have passed the dormant period and sprouted into 25-30 grams of seed blocks. Each block must contain a healthy bud eye. During the cutting process, change the knife every time you cut a whole potato. Sow seeds promptly after cutting, and do not pile up the cut seed blocks to prevent them from rotting.

4. Sowing depth

When sowing, the furrow depth should be about 15 cm. Apply fertilizer at the same time, mix nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, and apply pesticides in the furrow to prevent and control underground pests . After the fertilizer, pesticide and soil are fully mixed, plant the seed blocks into the ditch. Do not let the seed blocks come into contact with the fertilizer to prevent the fertilizer from burning the seed blocks. After sowing, cover the soil and build ridges in time. After final formation, the seed blocks should be no less than 12 cm away from the ridge surface.

The above is an introduction to when is the right time to plant potatoes. Early sowing of potatoes at the right time is the key to obtaining high yields. In plain areas, as long as the land is chemically accessible and can be plowed, it will be fine. When sowing, choose weather that is cold at the end and warm at the beginning to increase the ground temperature during sowing and promote early germination of seedlings.
