What is the best month to sow celery?

Celery can be planted all year round, but spring sowing is more suitable. The sowing time of spring celery in the north is January. Specifically, the seedling raising time is from January to March, and the transplanting time is from March to April. It can be harvested around June. In the Yangtze River Basin, March every year is the suitable sowing period.

How to grow celery?

1. Seed treatment

Soak it in clean water for 24 hours before sowing, then pick it up, wash it with clean water, rub it with your hands, wrap it with gauze, and put it in the refrigerator for germination. It can also be hung in the well 40 cm above the water surface for germination. Note that it must be rinsed once a day. The seeds will turn white after about 7 days. When 50% of the seeds turn white, they can be sown.

2. Seedbed selection

Celery likes a humid and cold climate. The seedbed should be selected in a place with loose and thick soil, fertile soil, convenient irrigation and drainage, and relatively shaded. Apply 100 kg of lime powder per acre of soil, deeply loosen it into the soil, and burn it in the sun until it is white.

3. Sowing and seedling raising

Celery is generally grown as seedlings before being transplanted. The seedlings can be grown in the open field under shade or in plug trays. During the seedling stage, the water absorption capacity is weak. Keeping the soil moist before emergence is conducive to rapid emergence.

4. Transplant at the right time

When the seedlings are 50-60 days old and 1-15 cm tall, they can be pulled out and transplanted. The spacing between transplanting rows is 17-27 cm, the spacing between clusters is about 1 cm, and there are 4-5 plants in each cluster. Water the plants while transplanting.

5. Field management

Celery needs to be watered once a day in the morning and evening until it starts to grow new roots. If there are dead seedlings, they should be replaced in time. When all the celery has grown new roots and released new leaves, apply fertilizer for the second time. If weeds appear in the field, weeds should be removed in time to prevent them from absorbing nutrients from the soil.

In general, celery can be grown all year round, and farmers can choose the appropriate planting time according to local climatic conditions and varieties to achieve the highest yield and quality and increase planting returns.
