What to do if the leaves of gardenia turn yellow

What to do if the leaves of gardenia turn yellow

1. Reasons

1. Improper moisture

If the plant is not watered enough, it is possible that its leaves will turn yellow. In addition, do not water it too much during the planting process. Water accumulation in the pot or too wet soil will cause the young leaves to become dull and grow slowly, and the old leaves will become yellow-green and gradually wither.

2. Improper lighting

Too much or too little light can cause the leaves of the plant to turn yellow. If exposed to direct strong sunlight for a long time, yellow spots will appear on the leaves. However, if the leaves are kept in a shaded environment for a long time, they will not get enough sunlight and will fall off. It is necessary to supplement light in time.

3. Improper fertilization

During the cultivation of gardenia, high fertilizer concentration will cause the plant to turn yellow, the tips of new leaves will appear yellow-brown, the leaf surface will be uneven and dull, and the old leaves will gradually wither and fall off. At this time, fertilizers need to be added in time, but before that, it is necessary to determine which fertilizers should be added based on the performance of the plants, as follows:

Nitrogen deficiency: When the plant lacks nitrogen, the leaves will simply turn yellow and the new leaves will be small and brittle.

Potassium deficiency: When plants lack potassium, the old leaves turn from green to brown.

Iron deficiency: At the beginning, the leaves turn light yellow or white, and the veins are still green. In severe cases, the veins also turn yellow or white, and eventually the leaves dry up and die.

Magnesium deficiency: Yellowing starts from old leaves and gradually develops to new leaves. The leaf veins are still green. In severe cases, the leaves fall off and die. ⑤ Phosphorus deficiency: old leaves are purple or dark red.

4. Temperature is too low

Gardenia can tolerate low temperatures, but too low temperatures will cause the leaves to turn yellow. During the maintenance of gardenias, they are prone to frostbite in winter. If no warming measures are taken in early spring and early winter nights, the plants are easily frozen.

2. Treatment methods

1. Slowly adapt to the environment

Most of the gardenias just bought from the market are taken out of the greenhouse, and they need a period of adaptation to the new environment. If the environmental differences are too great, yellow leaves will occur, which is an uncontrollable factor. Therefore, observe the leaves for a period of time before they turn yellow, and take good care of them during this period.

2. Reasonable watering

If it is short of water, replenish it with water in time. If it is watered too much, reduce the frequency and amount of watering.

3. Acidic water is more suitable

Gardenia likes acidic soil, and the tap water is alkaline or neutral, so add some acidic substances such as vinegar and citric acid frequently when watering.

4. Open windows for ventilation

Gardenias grown indoors need to be ventilated frequently, ensure that the environment is bright, and place the plant near the window for maintenance.

5. Reasonable fertilization

The above introduces the various manifestations of fertilizer deficiency in gardenia. Appropriate fertilizer should be added according to the growth status of the plant to ensure the balance of each nutrient. If you apply too much fertilizer, water it immediately or change the pot and soil.

6. Prune yellow leaves

When yellow leaves appear on the woody stems of gardenia, simply cut off the yellowing branches to ensure the normal growth of the main trunk. If you take good care of it, new leaves will grow soon.
