How to deal with orchid root rot

How to deal with orchid root rot

Unsuitable environment

Insufficient light: Different orchid varieties require different amounts of light, but basically they all need to be exposed to light for more than 4 hours. If there is insufficient or dim light, the photosynthesis of the orchid will be weak, and the soil in the pot will not dry easily, so the water will stay for a long time and affect the growth of the roots.

No ventilation or too much ventilation: If there is no ventilation, the maintenance environment will be too stuffy, the water will not dry easily, and the transpiration of the plant will also be weakened; if the ventilation is too large, the water in the flowerpot will be blown dry quickly. If water is not replenished in time, the water stored in the roots will slowly be depleted and gradually dry out.

Insufficient humidity: Orchids prefer a relatively humid environment, and their roots also need relatively stable temperature and humidity. If it is too hot or too dry, it will cause orchid root rot.

Therefore, improve the environment and ensure appropriate humidity. If the roots are always rotten and the growth is poor, it is mostly because the environment is too dry, especially the lack of humidity in summer, so you must pay attention to the control of ventilation, light and humidity.

Incorrect watering time and method

The time and method of watering will change with the dryness and wetness of the potting soil and the temperature of the four seasons. Choosing different watering methods can ensure that the potting soil is not too dry or too wet.

Therefore, it is best to water at night in summer. The water will drip away by the next day and the soil in the pot will not be too wet. Secondly, when watering, you should observe the growth of the plants. If the growth is not good, change the watering method and amount in time. In addition, do not water if the temperature is too low (below 10℃) or too high (above 30℃), otherwise the orchid will be frozen or steamed and the roots will rot.

Improper fertilization

Orchids have fleshy roots that store a lot of water and are unable to absorb high-concentration fertilizers. Especially when there are wounds on the roots, the roots will suffer from fertilizer damage and cause root rot. Therefore, when applying fertilizer, apply it thinly and frequently. In addition, when using fermented organic fertilizer or long-acting fertilizer, do not apply it too close to the roots to avoid root rot.

Sick

When orchids are threatened by pests and diseases, their roots will rot. In this case, people often only pay attention to the prevention and control of pests and diseases and ignore the existence of root rot. Killing insects is the key, but you should also check whether the roots are rotten and remove the plants from the pots in time.
