What to do if the roots of golden-edged agave rot

What to do if the roots of golden-edged agave rot

1. Check if it is a watering problem

First of all, we need to see if there is a problem with water use. It is very likely that it is because of too much watering, which caused its roots to rot. It likes humid air, but if you water it frequently, its roots will easily rot. Therefore, during the growth period from March to May, you can water it once every three or four days, and normally once a week is enough. It enters a dormant period in winter and needs to be watered once a month, and it must be watered thoroughly. If the surface of the soil is compacted, the soil needs to be loosened. Use a spray to water the leaves frequently to maintain humidity. If you use tap water, leave it for a day or two before using it. Do not spray water on the center of the leaves. If there is water accumulation, they will rot.

Solution: If the problem is with watering, replace the soil in the pot and cut off the rotten roots. Before cutting off the rotten roots, disinfect the scissors in alkaline water first. It is best to add perlite to the soil and break it into small portions. This can improve the soil, making it looser and more conducive to root breathing.

2. Check whether it is a bacterial infection

If its roots are rotten, it may be infected by bacteria. Bacteria or fungi may exist in soil, water and the environment. If we do not pay attention to eliminating bacteria, they will multiply in large numbers in the soil and the surrounding environment and harm plants. Sometimes people accidentally bump into it, or it gets bitten by insects, and these affected areas become pathways for bacteria to invade. If the surrounding environment is conducive to the reproduction of pathogens, it will be more likely to die.

Method: First take it out of the soil, cut off the rotten roots, spray pesticides to disinfect it, and then plant it in new soil.

3. Check whether it is improper maintenance

If not managed properly, the roots can easily rot. For example, if the pot is often too wet, the roots will lack oxygen and will be quickly damaged. Then, if they are stimulated by strong sunlight, poor ventilation, and too high a temperature, the roots will be more likely to rot. If the fertilizer is too concentrated or not fully decomposed, it will burn the roots and cause rot. If the temperature is not right, its breathing rate will increase, energy will be consumed faster, growth will be weak, and roots will rot.

Solution: Adjust its growth conditions and provide it with a suitable growth environment.
