How to trim and propagate coleus

How to trim and propagate coleus

1. Pruning method

1. Pinching: When pruning coleus, the first thing to pay attention to is pinching. It is usually done when the seedlings have grown 4-6 leaves. At this time, directly removing the growth point at the top can promote the sprouting of more side branches.

2. Thinning: During its peak growth season, the plant grows relatively fast. Too lush branches and leaves will affect its growth and reduce its appearance. At this time, weak branches should be pruned off and the density should be reduced to reduce unnecessary nutrient consumption.

3. Leaf picking: During management, no matter at which growth stage, yellow leaves should be picked off in time to avoid further infection and the spread of diseases and pests.

4. Pruning after flowering: Prune the flower branches in time after each flowering, leaving only two or three strong branches, and cut off the rest. This will encourage new branches to sprout and maintain its vitality.

2. Breeding Methods

Its reproduction is mostly carried out in two ways. One is the cutting method. Cut about 10 cm of young branches from a healthy mother plant as cuttings, and cut off half of the leaves on top to reduce water evaporation. Before planting, water the soil thoroughly, insert the cuttings to a depth of two centimeters, and place them in a warm and ventilated place to wait for rooting. The second is the sowing method. Its seeds are small and it is recommended to be mixed with the soil. Put two or three seeds in each hole, cover with soil and wait for germination.
