How to make calamus bonsai

How to make calamus bonsai

1. Plant selection

The calamus should be divided before it enters its vigorous growth period, so you can choose to divide it during the Grain Rain season. Plants with vigorous growth, thick tubers and short plants are good choices for bonsai making, and generally the calamus will be chosen.

2. Choose planting materials

When making calamus bonsai, you should choose loose and breathable sandy loam. If you choose stone as the pot, you don’t need planting materials, just use pebbles to fix the plant.

3. Fertilization

For pots with planting materials, you can place an appropriate amount of organic granular fertilizer on the surface of the pot. For pots without planting materials, you can apply liquid fertilizer. The fertilization of calamus needs to be controlled in moderation. Not fertilizing will cause the leaves to turn yellow and affect its growth. However, it is not tolerant to fertilizer. Excessive fertilization will cause seedling burn, which is also not conducive to its growth.

4. Watering

For potted calamus, watering is easier to control. Calamus likes moisture and avoids drought. Daily watering should keep the soil in the pot moist, but do not water too much, otherwise it will easily cause the leaves to turn yellow. In the dry air environment in summer, you can spray water on the leaves to maintain humidity.

5. Lighting

Acorus likes shade, but it cannot be completely without light. Appropriate scattered light is more conducive to its growth. For daily maintenance, it can be placed under the shade of large or medium-sized bonsai trees.

6. Plastic surgery

The more you trim the leaves of calamus, the thinner they become. However, the trimming should not be too frequent. You need to remove rotten and yellow leaves regularly to maintain its best ornamental effect.
