Key points of hydroponic culture of Caladium

Ecological habits of Caladium

Caladium prefers high temperature, high humidity and semi-shady environment and is not cold-resistant. The growing season is from June to October, with a suitable temperature of 21 to 27°C; October to the following June is the tuber dormancy period, with a suitable temperature of 18 to 24°C. If the temperature is lower than 18℃ during the growing period, the leaves will not grow upright and it will be difficult for new leaves to sprout. When the temperature is above 30℃, new leaves sprout quickly, the leaves are soft and thin, and the leaf viewing period is shortened. If the room temperature is lower than 15℃ during the tuber dormancy period, the tubers are very easy to rot. The soil requires fertile, loose and well-drained leaf mold or peat soil. Too wet or dry soil is not good for the growth of calamus leaves, and too much humidity in the tubers will easily rot.

Caladium prefers scattered light, but not too strong light. The leaves exposed to the scorching sun are easily burned, the leaf color is blurred, the veins are dull, and the ornamental value is poor. If there is insufficient light, the leaf spots will darken, the leaves will grow too long and appear weak. If the shade time is too long, the leaves will be tender, the petioles will be elongated, the leaf color will not be bright, and the petioles will break easily.

The ornamental characteristics and application of Caladium

The leaves of Caladium are ovate-triangular to heart-shaped, resembling elephant ears. The leaves have red spots, pink spots, and white spots. Caladium can increase air humidity. Absorb a certain amount of harmful gases such as formaldehyde and sulfur dioxide.

Hydroponic techniques and maintenance tips for Caladium

1. It is only suitable for cultivation in clear water or low concentration nutrient solution in spring, summer and autumn.

2. Spray water on the leaves frequently to make the leaves colorful.

3. During the water-growing period, the old leaves that turn yellow should be cut off in time. Do not pull them out forcibly, otherwise it will affect the root system and the growth of the plant.

4. If root rot is found, it should be cleaned in time, the water should be changed, and it should be washed or soaked with 0.05%-0.1% potassium manganate solution for 10-20 minutes, then rinsed with clean water and maintained with clean water.

5. Granular substrates can be used to fix roots and tubers to prevent lodging.

The best placement for hydroponic caladium

After growing in water, it can be placed in a place with strong light, such as a window bookshelf, balcony, courtyard, etc., or it can be placed on a low coffee table or desktop.
