The history of lemons

The origin of lemons is a mystery, but it is generally believed that lemons originated in southern India, China, and northern Myanmar.

Lemons actually have some historical origins. The first written record of lemons was in an agricultural work in the 10th century. In addition, according to Jewish historians, in the Jerusalem area in 90 BC, Jews there would throw lemons at priests who made mistakes during a certain festival.

In terms of cultivation history, lemons entered Europe from southern Italy during the ancient Roman period, and entered Persia, Egypt and other places around the 7th century. In the following period of time, lemons were widely cultivated. Later, Columbus brought lemons to America.

The Legend of Lemon

When talking about the legendary deeds of lemon, we have to talk about scurvy. In 1747, there was a surgeon named James Lind in the British Royal Navy. He was responsible for treating sailors suffering from scurvy. During the treatment, he would add lemon juice to the patients' food to treat those sailors suffering from scurvy.

In that era, European adventurers and navigators set out to sea to fight for the new world, but many crew members contracted scurvy during the voyage, and countless lives died as a result. To this end, they adopted many methods to treat the disease, and thus began research on the treatment of scurvy. Finally, the study found that eating lemons can effectively reduce the occurrence of scurvy. After this method was widely used, scurvy gradually disappeared.
