Peony cultivation methods and precautions

Peony cultivation methods and precautions

Peony is not only the king of flowers, but also the national flower of China. Peony is elegant and luxurious, representing prosperity, wealth, good luck and good fortune. Many people like this flower . Let’s talk about the cultivation methods and precautions of peony.

1. Soil

The soil for peonies should be loose, breathable and easy to drain. Mix one part yellow sand, one part leaf mold and one part garden soil evenly for cultivation. It is also very important to choose a pot for planting peonies. You should use a pot with good air permeability. Ceramic pots and clay pots are both good materials. When planting peonies, be sure to bury all the roots of the peony in the soil. It is best not to curl up the peony roots in the pot. Keep them straight in the pot, so the pot for planting peonies should not be too shallow.

2. Lighting

Peony is a light-loving plant and needs sufficient light, but the overly strong sunlight in summer needs appropriate shade, so it is best to plant peony on the east side of the house.

3. Watering

Peony has fleshy roots. It is relatively drought-resistant but afraid of waterlogging. When planted in the ground, it should be planted in a high place with easy drainage. If planted in a pot , do not put a tray under the pot. It is best to put two bricks under the pot to facilitate drainage when it rains. Watering the peony: There is no need to water it during the winter dormancy period, but it needs to be watered every day during the high temperatures in summer, and it should be watered thoroughly. It is best to water it thoroughly when the soil in the pot is completely dry.

4. Fertilization

Peonies do not like acid or alkali. Usually, they are fertilized with compound fertilizer solution. Fertilizer is applied once before flowering to promote flowering. Fertilizer is applied once half a month after flowering, which is called confinement fertilizer, in order to replenish the excessive nutrition consumed by the peony after flowering. After flowering, more organic fertilizer is applied, such as livestock manure, decomposed cake fertilizer, etc. When applying fertilizer, bury it two centimeters deep in the soil at a distance of 15 centimeters from the roots of the peony and water it thoroughly.

5. Transplanting

The season for transplanting peonies is mostly from September to October. The temperature in this season is suitable, and the peonies after transplanting can easily grow new roots. They can accumulate nutrients during the winter and will not affect their flowering and germination next year. Peonies can also be transplanted in March or April in spring, but if you transplant the peony at this time, it will need to develop new roots, and if it sends out flower buds, there will not be enough nutrients, so it is not easy for the peonies to bloom if transplanted in spring. When transplanting peonies, first remove all the peony leaves. Second, do not choose a rainy day. It is best to do it in the evening on a sunny day. Water thoroughly after transplanting, place it in a place without light for a while to slow down the growth, and then slowly place it in a place with sufficient light for maintenance. Remember! Do not fertilize the newly transplanted peony. Wait until it comes back to life before fertilizing it next year.

6. Temperature

Peonies are relatively cold-resistant. Normal varieties can withstand temperatures around minus 20 degrees Celsius, and some varieties can withstand lower temperatures, so peonies do not need to be protected from the cold when grown in central and southern China.
