The efficacy and function of Humulus

1. Antibacterial

The ethanol extract of Humulus japonicus leaves and stems can inhibit bacteria and significantly reduce the number of acid-fast bacilli in the liver, heart, lungs, spleen and stomach of infected mice.

2. Clear away heat and detoxify

Humulus can clear away heat and detoxify, and can effectively relieve symptoms such as lung heat and cough. It can be used in combination with other Chinese medicines such as Houttuynia cordata, Commelina communis, and Honeysuckle. Using it to boil water for external washing can also relieve symptoms of skin eczema or itching.

3. Diuresis and swelling

Humulus has a diuretic and detumescent effect, especially for symptoms such as difficulty urinating, urethral pain or hematuria caused by damp heat in the bladder. It can be used together with phoenix tail grass, Polygonum multiflorum, Malva ovata, Lycopodiella cernua, Rhizoma Cibotii, Imperatae cylindrica, etc. It can be crushed and applied externally to treat sores, swelling and pain.

4. Cough relief

Humulus can also be used to treat symptoms such as tuberculosis and cough. It can be used together with other Chinese medicines such as Stemona japonica, Scutellaria baicalensis, Salvia miltiorrhiza, and Rehmannia glutinosa.
