How to plant and raise Dendrobium

How to plant and raise Dendrobium

1. How to plant

1. Soil selection: Dendrobium has low requirements for soil. Wild Dendrobium can grow on tree bark or rock cracks, so the soil quality is not important. The growing environment is important. First of all, we must ensure that the air humidity is high, generally around 80%. Secondly, pay attention to the temperature. The temperature in winter must be above 0℃. In addition, you need to choose trees and stones. Trees are generally pear trees or camphor trees, and the surface of the stones should have moss and humus.

2. How to plant: Dendrobium is generally planted by division, which is mostly carried out in spring. At this time, the humidity is high, the rainfall is sufficient, and the survival rate of planting is relatively high. Choose healthy mature plants, cut off the 2-year-old new stems, remove the old roots that are too long, and only keep about 2-3 cm. Stick it in the cracks between stones or in tree bark, and apply a mixture of cow dung and mud to make sure it sticks tightly and doesn't fall off.

3. Daily management: Dendrobium prefers a warm and humid environment, but it cannot be watered directly. Instead, the humidity of the environment should be increased by spraying water. During its growing period, it is necessary to apply appropriate topdressing fertilizer, generally nitrogen fertilizer, mixed with manure and river mud, and applied once around the Qingming Festival. When the beginning of winter comes, make fertilizer with rapeseed cake and superphosphate and apply it on its roots.

4. Pest and disease control: During the growth process of Dendrobium, it is necessary to prevent black spot disease and anthracnose, and also be careful of scale insects. Black spot disease will cause the leaves to wither, which usually occurs in March to May. It can be prevented and controlled by spraying with carbendazim solution. Anthracnose causes dark brown spots on leaves, which occurs from January to May and is usually controlled by spraying with carbendazim or thiophanate-methyl. The scale insect usually recurs in May and can be killed with dimethoate emulsion.

2. How to raise

When growing Dendrobium, you must pay attention to shading. It does not like light and will grow better in a semi-shaded and semi-sunny place. Although the plant likes moisture, it cannot be watered directly because the roots have weak ability to absorb water. It mainly relies on the leaves to absorb water from the air, so a high humidity must be maintained. In addition, appropriate fertilizer should be applied, with more nitrogen fertilizer in spring and more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer in winter.
