The cultivation methods and precautions of Lythrum salicina

How to grow Lythrum salicina

Pot soil selection

When choosing a flowerpot for potted loosestrife, you can choose flexibly according to your needs. You can choose a flower pot with a larger diameter and plant several plants in a cluster, or you can choose a small flower pot with a diameter of about 20 cm to make miniature potted plants. To plant loosestrife in a pot, you need to use pond mud and the soil must be fertile.

Light and temperature

Lythrum lucidum prefers a warm and well-lit growing environment. It needs light and ventilation. Lythrum salicaria is also relatively cold-resistant and can overwinter outdoors in winter.

Water and fertilizer management

Lythrum salicaria mostly grows near swamps or wetlands. It likes water and grows better in shallow water, so during the growth period, it is necessary to ensure that there is water in the flowerpot. In the cold winter, the pot must also be kept moist and watered frequently. However, Lythrum salicaria does not need to be fertilized frequently, just add some base fertilizer in the potting room. However, if the leaves of the loosestrife turn yellow, you can apply some fertilizer.

Reproduction method

The main methods of propagation of Lythrum salicaria are division and cuttings, but it can also be propagated by sowing, both of which are relatively easy to survive.

Precautions for the cultivation of Lythrum salicina

prune

During the growth of Lythrum salicaria, pinching is necessary to control the plant height. Pinch the top 1 to 2 times to dwarf the plant. After the loosestrife blooms, the withered flowers should be cut off to promote the germination of new flower buds and make the next batch of flowers bloom. Normally, you can trim off the dense branches and leaves to facilitate ventilation. In winter, you should cut off the old branches of the loosestrife to help it overwinter.

Pests and diseases

Lythrum salicina has fewer diseases and pests, but it is susceptible to spot disease, which causes spots on the leaves. Sometimes, loosestrife will be harmed by red spider mites due to poor ventilation, and can be killed with insecticides. The growing environment of Lythrum salicina must be kept ventilated.
