Varieties of Bayberry

Water chestnut and bayberry

This species has the widest distribution and the largest planting area in my country. It is native to Lanxi, Yuyao, Cixi and Xianju in Zhejiang Province and is currently the main promoted variety in China. In 1984, the canned syrup made from this variety won the World Tourism Food Golden Laurel Award and the National Silver Award. The water chestnut variety of bayberry matures around late June every year. The fruit is of excellent quality, purple-black in color, and the flesh and core are easy to separate, making it convenient to eat. This variety can be eaten fresh or juiced. It is reported that bayberry has anti-cancer effects.

Late Rice Bayberry

Late rice bayberry has a cultivation history of more than 140 years and is one of the best quality late rice varieties. It is native to Gaoxie, Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province. Late rice bayberry matures around early July. Compared with other varieties, it has a stronger fruit aroma and is an excellent variety for fresh eating and processing. This variety has a well-developed root system, is tolerant to poor soil conditions and is high-yielding. However, it has weak disease resistance, so strict quarantine is required before planting, and attention should also be paid to disease and insect prevention during the planting process.

Dongkui Bayberry

Also known as giant bayberry, it has the largest bayberry fruit shape. It is native to Huangyan and Linhai Xianju in Zhejiang Province, and usually matures in early July. The fruit is purple-red in color, sweet and sour in taste, and of high quality. Dongkui bayberry trees grow very well, with sparse but sturdy branches, so they are more resistant to winds, have a relatively high and stable yield, and are suitable for fresh consumption.

Dingao plum is native to the tea mountains of Zhejiang Province. It usually matures in late June. The fruit is purple-red with a long stalk. A prominent feature is the green tumor-like protrusions on the fruit stalk. This kind of fruit is of high quality and can be stored and transported easily if picked with the stalk.

Early Capsule

This is a seedling variant of the water chestnut species, which matures one to two weeks earlier than the water chestnut species. It can significantly advance the supply period of bayberry, and is a successful selection of early-maturing varieties. The fruit characteristics are similar to those of the water chestnut species, purple-red in color, and the fruit shape is significantly larger than the "Yewu" bayberry of the same period.

Anhai hard waxberry

Originated from Anhai, Fujian, the fruit of Anhai hard-threaded bayberry is a perfect spherical shape. The ripe fruit is purple-black, with a round and blunt flesh column and green tumor-like protrusions on the fruit stalk. Anhai hard-shelled bayberry has a relatively rough texture and is very resistant to storage and transportation, so this variety is more common in fruit markets outside the province. It is a rare variety suitable for long-distance transportation.

Linhai Early Plum

As the name suggests, it is a large-fruit variety that matures relatively early, usually in mid-June, and has good quality. The flesh of this variety is relatively hard and relatively resistant to storage and transportation. The fruit can still maintain its original color after being stored for a whole day after being harvested, and it has great potential for development.
