The correct way to grow water lilies

The correct way to grow water lilies

Water lily is a perennial aquatic herb that looks like a lotus. It has a small plant shape, rich flower colors, and extremely high ornamental value. So how do you grow water lilies? Let’s take a look at the correct way to grow water lilies.

1. Flowerpot selection

Generally, it is best to use smaller pots or larger flower pots that can hold water to grow water lilies. The diameter of the pot or pot should be at least 25 centimeters. If it is too small, the water lily will not grow.

2. Soil selection

Although water lilies are grown in water, the soil is also very important. It is best to put decomposed bean cake or bone meal at the bottom of the selected flower pot, and then put more than 30 cm of fertile river mud on it, and then plant the water lily in it.

3. Planting method

Bury the water lily tubers in the soil and keep them at a certain angle so that they can take root and grow better. At the same time, make sure the leaves and flowers of the water lilies are above the water surface for photosynthesis and viewing.

4. Temperature and light

Water lilies like plenty of sunlight, at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day, and the water temperature should be controlled between 20-30℃. During cold seasons, you may consider moving your water lilies to a greenhouse or indoors for maintenance.

5. Water quality management

Water lilies prefer clear water, and it is recommended to use tap water or purified water. The ammonia nitrogen and nitrate content in the water should be kept within an appropriate range. The water source can be replaced regularly or water purifiers can be added.

6. Fertilization and maintenance

Generally, water lilies do not need to be fertilized in the early stages of their growth. Wait until its leaves grow vigorously, at least 5-6 leaves, then start fertilizing, once every 15-25 days. Sprinkle a few grains of compound fertilizer or slow-release fertilizer , or give it some water-soluble fertilizer , and then just wait for it to bloom.

7. Trim and change mud

After the water lily finishes blooming, some withered flowers and leaves will remain on the plant. They will not only increase the nutrient consumption of the plant, but also affect the ornamental effect, so they need to be cut off in time. In addition, the soil for growing water lilies needs to be changed every year, because after a year of growth, the nutrients in the soil are basically used up by the plants. Changing the soil is to ensure that the plants have access to adequate nutrients.

In general, the cultivation and maintenance of water lilies is not difficult, but providing them with a suitable growing environment is essential for their healthy growth. Therefore, during the maintenance process, special attention should be paid to environmental control such as light, temperature, water and fertilizer to ensure the successful cultivation of water lilies.
