How to manage eggplant in summer?

Growing eggplant in the summer is essential to meet the demands of the fall vegetable market. However, factors such as high temperatures, rainfall, and pests and diseases in summer may adversely affect the growth and yield of eggplant. In order to ensure the high quality and stable high yield of eggplant, let’s mainly learn how to manage eggplant in summer.

1. Reasonable topdressing

Seedling-raising fertilizer: After the eggplant seedlings survive, apply fertilizer in time, applying 1000-2000 kg of 20% human feces and urine, or 10-20 kg of triple compound fertilizer per mu.

Initial fruit fertilizer: During the eggplant expansion period, apply 1500-2000 kg of human manure or 15-25 kg of triple compound fertilizer per mu.

Fruit-enhancing fertilizer: During the eggplant fruiting period, increase the amount of fertilizer applied, applying 2000-3000 kg of human feces and urine, or 20-30 kg of triple compound fertilizer per mu.

2. Scientific watering

Rooting water: Make sure the eggplants are watered thoroughly after planting.

Fruit-stabilizing water: When eggplant fruits begin to develop, water them with fruit-stabilizing water to promote rapid growth of young fruits.

Fruit-strengthening water: When the fruit is developing fastest, water the fruit heavily to meet the water demand.

Peel water: Water lightly 2-3 days before harvest to allow the fruits to fully grow and the peel to be fresh, tender and shiny.

3. Pruning and cutting branches

Natural happy pruning method: keep two symmetrical branches on each layer of branches and remove other unnecessary branches.

When to prune: After the eggplant is firmly established, remove the lower fragile buds in time and top and pinch regularly.

4. Pest and disease control

Main diseases and pests: cotton blight, brown spot disease, bud borer, etc.

Prevention and control measures:

Cotton blight: Use 500-800 times diluted 70% dichlorvos or 600-1000 times diluted 70% thiophanate-methyl.

Brown spot disease: Use 500-800 times diluted 65% Mancozeb.

Other pests and diseases: Pay attention to prevent morning and evening blight, aphids, red spiders, etc.

5. Harvest time

Eggplants develop white to green ring-shaped nodes. It is best to pick once a day to avoid the fruits being too large and affecting the quality.

The above are the key points for managing eggplants in summer. Doing these well can effectively increase the yield and quality of eggplants and ensure a stable supply in the autumn market.
