Difference Between Winter Wheat and Spring Wheat

Difference Between Winter Wheat and Spring Wheat

1. The difference between winter wheat and spring wheat

Planting area: The planting areas of spring wheat and winter wheat are divided by the Great Wall. Spring wheat is planted in the colder areas north of the Great Wall, and winter wheat is planted in the warmer areas north of the Great Wall.

Planting and harvesting time: Spring wheat is planted north of the Great Wall. It is usually sown between March and April after the Spring Festival, and then harvested from August to September of the same year. Winter wheat in the areas south of the Great Wall is usually sown between September and October of the previous year and harvested between April and May of the following year.

Characteristics: Spring wheat is relatively drought-resistant, has a shorter plant shape but larger ears, and a shorter growing period, but its quality is worse than winter wheat and it is not as delicious as winter wheat. Winter wheat is very cold-resistant, so it can be sown in October and its seedlings will survive the winter. By spring, its seedlings will quickly branch out and grow taller. Winter wheat is of very good quality and the flour ground from it is delicious.

Climate of the planting area: Spring wheat is planted in areas with very cold winters. Because the temperature is too low in winter to sow, it must be sown after the beginning of spring. Winter wheat is sown in relatively warm places. It is relatively cold-resistant and can survive the winter. It is sown in winter and harvested in summer.

2. The origin of winter wheat and spring wheat

China's wheat is mainly grown in the northern region. The northeast region is very cold in winter, so it can only be sown after the temperature begins to rise in spring. The wheat sown at this time is called spring wheat. The growth cycle of spring wheat is relatively short and the harvest time is relatively early. The winter temperature in North China is slightly higher, so wheat can survive the winter safely, so this area can be sown in winter. Therefore, spring wheat is sown in spring, and winter wheat is sown in winter.
