How to propagate magnolia

Grafting

Grafting is specifically divided into two methods: approach grafting and cut grafting, among which the approach grafting is the most commonly used method.

Docking:

The grafting process can last from spring to autumn, that is, this method can be used throughout the entire growing period of magnolia. It is usually carried out between April and July.

It is best to choose a position where the plant is about 70 cm from the ground.

After tying the main branches, wrap them with mud and wrap them with leaves on the outside to avoid being eroded by rain. After about 60 days, you can cut them off.

Although grafting has a good guarantee on plant survival rate, propagation by cutting grafting will make the plant grow more luxuriantly.

Layering

Layering propagation is divided into two methods: ordinary layering and college layering.

Ordinary layering:

This layering method is best performed between February and March.

The best time to perform this layering method is from February to March. First, cut the branches to be layered at about half the depth, cut another section upwards, then put a small piece of tile in the middle, and slowly press the branches into the soil to avoid breaking them.

You can use "U"-shaped thick iron wire to help fix the branches to prevent them from curling up, and finally pile up the soil. If this layering method is used in spring, the plants can be cut and transplanted after the roots and buds emerge.

High branch layering:

This layering method requires selecting disease-free, strong young branches with a diameter of about 1.5-2 cm from the mother plant before the beginning of the dog days. Cut a crack at the lower end of the pot, then put a bamboo tube or a bottomless clay pot on it, fill it with culture soil, and tie it on the outside with a thin rope.

Avoid being touched and water frequently, but not too much. Just keep the plant moist. New roots will grow around May of the following year, and you can remove them and plant them.
