How to prune asparagus fern

How to prune asparagus fern

Growth stage

Topping during seedling stage

The seedlings are grown from a small size. When the tender green branches grow to a certain height, the tops can be removed to make the plants short and strong, thus promoting branching.

Loss of leaves during the growing season

When adult asparagus fern enters the growth period, the leaves at the top of the branches will not grow well due to different maintenance environments. The top leaves are missing. At this time, the main branches can be pruned. Pay attention to the side buds on the branches and do not cut them off at will.

1~2 year old asparagus fern

After growing for a few years, asparagus fern has basically taken shape, but many new branches will grow around it, making the plant shape inevitably a bit messy. Because there are many branches and their thickness grows unevenly, pruning is necessary.

In order to ensure the beautiful shape of the plant, some branches that are too thick or too thin should be cut short. If the new branches are too messy, cut them off to ensure that each branch grows upright.

3~4 years old asparagus fern

Asparagus fern that has grown for more than 3 years will gradually grow into climbing branches. These branches are slender and grow weakly. If you are not collecting seeds, these branches can be cut off from the roots at one time. If there are gaps in branches due to pruning, you can shorten them at certain locations.

The editor would like to emphasize here that if the asparagus fern has been grown for 3 or 4 years and has never been pruned once, and its creeping branches are dense and it blooms and bears fruit, such plants are not suitable for indoor viewing if they are not pruned in time.

Poorly growing asparagus fern

During the maintenance process, the leaves of asparagus fern will lose gloss or even wilt due to the influence of light, temperature and lack of fertilizer. At this time, the whole plant needs to be renewed.

Cut off all leafy branches, especially those that are diseased, yellow, or wilted. Reduce watering after pruning (as the asparagus fern has fewer leaves, its water absorption capacity will also decrease), and ensure that the soil in the pot is dry but not hot, otherwise it will cause the asparagus fern to die.

The lazy way to prune asparagus fern

Basin control method

The bolder the people are, the bigger the productivity of the land and the bigger the flowerpot, the bigger the asparagus fern will grow. During the growth process of asparagus fern, it can be pruned according to the size of the flowerpot, and the ratio of the flowerpot to the plant should be controlled at 1:3. This can not only control the growth of the root system, but also ensure that the plant shape remains in a stable state for a long time.

Remove the growing point

In fact, asparagus fern does not have to grow to 20 to 30 cm before it can be pruned. No matter how tall it grows, as long as the side buds are controlled.

When the new shoots grow to 2 to 3 centimeters, remove the growth point (that is, the tender shoots at the top). This will not only promote the branching and leaf growth of the branches on the stem, but the key point is to ensure that the plant is short and strong, the branches and leaves grow flat, and the plant shape continues to be fuller.

Taking advantage of the phototropism of asparagus fern

In fact, not all pruning requires the use of a knife. Flower lovers often prune asparagus fern because of its uneven growth and branches of different lengths, but this is actually completely unnecessary. During the maintenance process, rotate the flowerpot from time to time so that every corner of the asparagus fern can receive sufficient light, and the uneven parts will gradually grow even.
