Bougainvillea propagation methods and precautions

Bougainvillea propagation methods and precautions

Cuttings

Preparatory steps for cuttings

The first thing to prepare is naturally the soil matrix. You can use sandy soil and add some perlite and peat.

Then there are the flower pots. Bougainvillea does not have high requirements for flower pots, a simple plastic pot will do.

Finally, prepare the branches for cuttings. Cut the strong branches that have become woody or semi-woody in the current year.

Cutting propagation method

Insert the cuttings into the soil to a depth of about 7-8 cm, exposing the branches with leaves.

After planting, water it thoroughly, cover the entire surface of the flowerpot with a layer of plastic wrap to maintain moisture, and place it where it can be exposed to scattered light.

Maintenance and management after cutting

The most important things in caring for bougainvillea are moisturizing and ventilation.

If the moisture is not enough, the leaves will wilt and burn. Check it frequently. If the floral mud is dry and the leaves are wilting, spray some water.

Open the plastic wrap every evening to provide proper ventilation. If it is too hot inside, the branches will get moldy and the plant will basically die.

High pressure breeding

High-pressure propagation, that is, high-altitude layering propagation.

Advantages of high pressure breeding

First, the survival rate is high. Branches with roots that have been high-pressured can basically survive if they are cut and transplanted as long as the roots are not damaged.

Second, there is basically no need to slow down the seedlings.

Third, it is easy to shape. After the branches are high-pressured, they are transplanted into a new pot and, with a little pruning, they will immediately grow into a healthy and beautiful bonsai flower. <

High-pressure breeding method

First, ring-cut the branches that require high pressure about 3 mm wide two inches above the bifurcation of the mother plant. And clean the outer skin.

Wrap the branches with fertile and moist soil, and then tie the two ends of the plastic bag tightly.

After being wrapped in a plastic bag, the soil generally will not lose water and dry out. If the soil is dry, you can use a syringe to inject water.

After more than a month, you can see many roots growing through the plastic bag, and then you can cut them off and transplant them.

When transplanting, you can pile up some soil on one side of the flowerpot so that the root ball can lean against it and the plant can grow upright.

Then cover the root ball with soil, compact it, and water it. This way, the high-pressure propagation of Bougainvillea is done!
