How to sow cornflowers

How to sow cornflowers

Sowing time

Cornflower is a herbaceous plant with fresh and lovely flowers and is relatively easy to cultivate, so many people like to grow potted cornflowers at home. Cornflowers can be sown in spring or autumn, but autumn is the best time to sow them.

Sowing method

Cornflowers can be sown in mid-to-late September;

In the prepared potting soil, sprinkle an appropriate amount of cornflower seeds, the seeds should be healthy and full;

Then sprinkle a thin layer of soil on top, and cover until the seeds are no longer visible;

After spreading a small amount of soil, compact it slightly, but be careful not to use too much force, otherwise the seeds will not easily emerge from the soil;

Water it enough so that water flows out of the opening at the bottom of the pot;

In the following days, you should water frequently, keep the soil moist, and observe it frequently.

After the plants are planted and survive, apply appropriate amount of fertilizer every 10 days or half a month, and stop fertilizing in March of the second year to wait for flowering.

Precautions

Since cornflowers are native to European fields, they are relatively cold-resistant and prefer cool and sunny environments. Therefore, loose, fertile, well-drained sandy loam is the best choice for the culture soil. The potting soil should be loose and fertile. It is best to use a mixture of garden soil, leaf mold, wood ash, etc. When the seedlings have 6-7 leaves, the first transplant should be carried out and the dwarf seedlings should be moved to a tube pot.
