How to propagate Saxifrage

How to propagate Saxifrage

sowing

Soil selection

The soil for sowing saxifrage should be fertile, moist and well-aired. Dense and humid forests and cool and moist soils on bank walls are better.

Season Selection

The sowing of Saxifrage is carried out in March and April, and the seedlings will emerge after half a month. In spring, saxifrage grows faster. After seedlings emerge, they can be planted in pots when the root system is well developed.

Seedling care

The seedlings are relatively fragile and tender, and cannot withstand strong winds and waves, so they need to be treated gently. Avoid exposure to the sun, waterlogging in the pot soil, and low temperatures.

After the root system of the seedlings gradually develops, you don't need to water them too frequently, just keep the soil in the pot moist for a long time. The light can be warm diffuse light, and it is best to place it on the back balcony or in a cool and light-transmitting place.

Division

Season Selection

The division of Saxifrage can be carried out in spring, summer, autumn and winter, but winter is colder and summer is hotter, so spring and autumn are the best seasons.

Division method

In late spring or early autumn, cut off the small plants on the creeping branches and plant them in shallow culture pots, one plant per pot. Cover them with glass or plastic film and pay attention to maintaining a high humidity. Wait until the root system is well developed before transplanting them into small pots.

You can also plant the small plants directly in small pots, water them thoroughly, and place them in a shady and humid place. They will resume growth in about 2 weeks.

If planted in a rock garden, plant it on the north side of the rock to avoid direct sunlight.

If it is a potted plant, plant one seedling in each pot and hang it under the eaves in front of the window, allowing it to crawl and droop.

Maintenance of ramet seedlings

Need to spray water frequently to increase the surrounding humidity. In hot seasons, place it in a ventilated and cool place and control moisture.

After growth resumes in autumn, watering needs to be increased and thin liquid fertilizer should be applied twice a week. Fertilizer needs to be applied from under the leaves to avoid contaminating the leaves and affecting growth.

The fun of growing saxifrage in a bottle

Take a small-mouthed triangular round bottle of suitable size, first put a layer of foam plastic blocks on the bottom of the bottle as a water-retaining layer, then press it with a thick layer of broad bean stones as a refreshing water layer, and finally put a layer of leaf mold as the culture soil layer. Carefully plant the saxifrage seedlings with a long-handled spoon, then slowly pour the nutrient solution along the edge of the bottle until it reaches the bean stone layer. The bottle is placed in a diffuse light place in front of the window for cultivation.
