How to propagate American mint

How to sow American mint

Sowing is generally carried out in spring and autumn.

Choose fertile and loose soil, prepare a slightly larger flowerpot, fill it with soil and water it thoroughly.

Sprinkle the seeds evenly in the soil, and try to keep the distance between each seed at about 1 to 2 cm, so that there will be no thinning after the seedlings emerge, which will affect the growth of the seedlings.

After sowing, the temperature is controlled at 21~24℃. The seeds will germinate 10~21 days after sowing, and the germination rate can reach over 90%. It will bloom after 4 months.

Cutting method of American mint

If you don't have seeds or American mint, you can ask a friend for help and cut a few branches to grow a full pot.

From April to May every year, cut thick, full, disease- and insect-free branches with a length of 5 to 8 cm and insert them directly into the potting soil.

The soil can be ordinary garden soil, with some vermiculite added to increase permeability, or Akadama soil.

The cuttings will basically take root 2 weeks after being grafted. After the root system is slightly stable, you can consider repotting.

How to divide American mint

The division method is mainly carried out in spring and autumn, but it requires certain conditions. When the plant has been growing for more than 3 years, new shoots will appear around the old plant.

American mint has a strong tillering ability, and the young shoots around the old plants can be dug out and planted directly. Alternatively, remove the plant from the pot, divide it into clumps and plant it separately.

American mint has a strong ability to propagate through division, and because of its strong expansion potential, it needs to be divided every 2 to 3 years, and division can be combined with repotting.
