How to grow Kalanchoe so that it blooms continuously

Kalanchoe is a common ornamental plant. It has the characteristics of fleshy plants, is easy to maintain, is highly ornamental, and has a long flowering period, so it is deeply loved by flower lovers. However, if you want the Kalanchoe to continue blooming, you need to master the correct maintenance methods. So how do you grow Kalanchoe so that it blooms continuously? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Soil selection

Kalanchoe likes to grow in loose, breathable and well-drained soil. When caring for it on a daily basis, try to choose leaf mold, coal slag and garden soil. Smash the coal slag into small pieces and wash them clean before use. During the growing period, the soil should be loosened appropriately to increase soil permeability.

2. Lighting conditions

Kalanchoe loves light and needs sufficient diffuse light, avoiding direct sunlight, especially during the high temperatures in summer. In spring, autumn and winter, you can place the Kalanchoe near a brightly lit and well-ventilated windowsill or balcony. Ensuring 4-6 hours of light every day will help the differentiation of flower buds and the continued opening of flowers.

3. Temperature control

The suitable growth temperature for Kalanchoe is 15-25℃. During the high temperatures in summer, it should be moved to a well-ventilated semi-shaded place to avoid direct sunlight, and water should be sprayed around the plant to increase the air humidity. When the temperature drops in winter, it should be moved to a warm place indoors and the room temperature kept above 10°C to prevent frostbite.

4. Watering tips

Kalanchoe is relatively drought-tolerant, so watering is not recommended too often. Generally, the principle of "water thoroughly when dry" should be followed, and watering should be done when the soil surface is 2-3 cm dry. During the peak growing seasons in spring and autumn, you can increase the amount of watering appropriately, but you should also avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.

5. Reasonable fertilization

During the growing season, apply decomposed organic fertilizer , compound fertilizer , general nutrient solution or special fertilizer for Kalanchoe once every half a month. Apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate before flowering to promote flower bud differentiation and flowering. In winter, Kalanchoe grows slowly, so fertilization should be reduced or stopped.

6. Proper pruning

Pinch off the top in the early stages of vigorous growth to promote branching. After the flowers wither, cut off the remaining flowers in time to avoid them consuming too much nutrients. At the same time, regularly thin out the branches of the Kalanchoe, cut off dense, overgrown, dead and diseased branches, and keep the plant well ventilated and light-permeable, which can promote the sprouting of new branches and the formation of flower buds.

To sum up, the maintenance of Kalanchoe requires comprehensive consideration of multiple aspects such as light, temperature, watering, fertilizing, and pruning. Only by doing these maintenance details well can the Kalanchoe grow healthily and vigorously and continue to bloom beautiful flowers.
