How to graft Cornus officinalis

How to graft Cornus officinalis

Advantages of Grafting Propagation of Cornus officinalis

The process of seed propagation of Cornus officinalis is relatively long. The seedlings will not bear fruit until more than 10 years after planting, while the grafted seedlings can bloom and bear fruit in 2 to 3 years. Propagation by grafting can make Cornus officinalis bear fruit earlier and bring benefits earlier.

The rootstock and grafting time of dogwood grafting

Generally, the rootstock for grafting Cornus officinalis is its own high-quality seedlings. The grafted scion should be taken from high-quality mother trees with high yield, strong growth and no diseases and pests.

Generally, around mid to late March, Cornus officinalis is grafted using bark cuttings. From mid-July to mid-August, bud grafting of Cornus officinalis is generally carried out.

How to graft dogwood

The bark grafting of Cornus officinalis mainly involves cutting off the part of the Cornus officinalis plant 5-10 cm close to the ground, flattening the cut, and using a grafting knife to cut from top to bottom on the windward side, deep into the wood, and then using the knife to pry open a crack in the cortex of the interface. Cut the scion into 15cm long sections, cut a 3~5cm long oblique section on the lower back side of the main bud to expose the cambium, put the cut scion in your mouth and keep it moist for later use. Next, place the scion's bevel inward with the tip facing the cut, press the cut of the rootstock tightly with your hand and slowly insert the scion. Then tap the joint lightly with a grafting knife to tighten it, and finally tie the joint with plastic film. When the scion seedlings grow to 50 cm in height, cut the plastic film with a knife.

For bud grafting of Cornus officinalis, first select mature and strong scion and remove the tender buds. Use a knife to carve the bark of the rootstock 5 to 10 cm above the ground into a piece the same size as the bud. Embed the bud to be grafted into the bark removal area of the rootstock, and then tie it tightly with plastic film, but leave the grafted bud exposed. 7 to 10 days after grafting, the interface will heal and you can untie the bandages and cut off the main trunk 5 cm above the bud.
