How to propagate perennial iris

Propagation by division

Division propagation is a common method of propagation for perennial irises. Division is generally carried out every 2 to 4 years, in spring, autumn or after flowering, and care should be taken to avoid the rainy season.

When propagating by division, the tubers are usually divided, each piece needs to have 3 or 4 buds, and the leaves on the top of the plant need to be cut off.

When propagating by division, you also need to pay attention to dividing after flowering, so that the flower buds can fully differentiate before winter and bloom in the second year. Be careful not to divide too finely when dividing, and it is best to plant shallowly when planting.

Seed propagation

Perennial irises can also be propagated by sowing. The seeds need to be sown immediately after they mature. This way, the seeds will be easier to germinate and will bloom in 2 to 3 years.

How to propagate bulbous irises

Bulbous irises are usually propagated through bulbs. Generally, planted bulbous irises will grow and bloom after a year, consuming a large amount of nutrients, and many new small bulbs will grow on the bulbs. After 1-2 years of cultivation, these small bulbs can grow into new bulbs and be planted and bloom. Remove the small ball and gently press it into the soil to avoid damaging the ball as much as possible. Generally, it can be cultivated on a sand bed with sandy soil.

When propagating bulbous irises, not only can the small bulbs grown on the bulbs be used, but its axillary buds, scales, and flower stems can also be cultivated to grow into new bulbs.
