How to propagate Polygonatum odoratum

Ecological habits of Polygonatum odoratum

Polygonatum odoratum grows on the shady slopes of mountains below 3,000 meters above sea level. Wild Polygonatum odoratum generally grows in the shade and wet places in the forest or on the grass on the hillside. It is suitable to cultivate Polygonatum odoratum in fertile and loose soil that is sheltered from the wind and faces the sun. It should not be planted in places that are too large or clayy.

Seed propagation of Polygonatum odoratum

The wild fruits are harvested around September, soaked in water, the peel and pulp are rubbed off, mixed with moist sand and stored in the sand, and left until the spring of the following year when they are taken out and sown. Build a soil bed on the soil, dig furrows about 10 cm apart, then sow the seeds evenly into the furrows, cover with soil about 2 cm thick, and press down slightly.

Rhizome propagation of Polygonatum odoratum

When harvesting in autumn, select the yellow-white root buds that have grown that year as seeds. Sow them when the weather is good and plant them as you choose. If the weather changes and you cannot plant them, the root buds must be placed in a cool, sheltered place for cultivation. Around October, choose a sunny or cloudy day for planting. When planting, dig a 15 cm deep trench on the ridge with a row spacing of about 30 cm. Place the seed stems in the trench with a distance of about 15 cm between each plant. Cover with rotted manure and then with moist fine soil that is level with the ridge surface.
