Astilbe cultivation methods and precautions

Astilbe is also called golden cat, golden-haired Panax notoginseng , etc. The leaves of this plant look very beautiful, the leaves are emerald green, and the flowers are very bright. It is a perennial shade-tolerant plant and can grow and bloom in places with insufficient light. Let’s talk about the cultivation methods and precautions of Astilbe.

1. Soil

Cultivating astilbe requires very suitable soil, usually loose and fertile soil, preferably sandy soil with good drainage. We can add some organic fertilizer to the soil, which can meet the various elements needed for the growth of astilbe. Be careful not to make the soil too poor.

2. Temperature

Astilbe has a strong adaptability to temperature and can grow normally between 15 and 30 degrees. When the temperature is higher than 35 degrees in summer, it is necessary to pay attention to shading and cooling. It can be placed in a cool and ventilated semi-shaded place for maintenance, and water and fertilizer should be controlled appropriately. In winter, it can be allowed to hibernate naturally, and then the rhizomes can be dug out and stored in a dry place, and then planted again when it is warm next year. If you do not want it to hibernate, you should move it to a warm indoor room in time for maintenance, and try to keep the room temperature between 10 and 12 degrees.

3. Lighting

The growth and flowering of Astilbe also requires a certain amount of light. Adequate light can not only promote its photosynthesis, but also promote the differentiation of flower buds, thereby increasing the amount and quality of flowering. Therefore, except for the midsummer and early autumn when the sunlight is particularly strong, it needs appropriate shade to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. In other seasons, it can be placed in a bright place indoors and given sufficient light to help the plant grow stronger and bloom more beautifully.

4. Watering

The water requirements of Astilbe chinensis are different in different growth stages and seasons. Generally speaking, we can water it according to the principle of watering it when the soil is dry, not watering when it is not dry, and watering thoroughly when watering. Try to keep the soil in the pot moist but not waterlogged. During the dormant period in winter and summer, water must be strictly controlled to keep the soil in the pot slightly moist. Water less or not at all on rainy days, and avoid long-term water accumulation in the pot.

5. Fertilization

Astilbe requires a lot of nutrients to grow and bloom, so we can apply some thin compound liquid fertilizer to it in time during the maintenance process. In the early growth stage, a little nitrogen fertilizer can be added to promote the growth of branches and leaves; before the flowering period, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be used as the main fertilizers to promote more flowering of the plants. Fertilization should follow the principle of applying thin fertilizers frequently, and avoid concentrated fertilizers and raw fertilizers. Fertilization is prohibited during high temperatures in summer and low temperatures in winter to avoid fertilizer damage, which may cause root burns, seedling burns, etc.

6. Pruning and ventilation

Astilbe grows very fast, so it can be pruned and shaped regularly. Dead branches, diseased branches, overgrown branches, and branches that grow too messily should all be pruned away or shortened appropriately to keep the plant beautiful and neat and promote the sprouting of more new branches and leaves. After each flowering, the remaining flowers and dead leaves should be trimmed off in time to reduce the loss of nutrients and facilitate early re-flowering. In addition, during normal maintenance, you must maintain a good ventilation environment and open windows frequently to enhance air circulation and reduce the growth of bacteria.
